Community Service/Philanthropy

Community Service

Alpha Lambda contributed 1,243 man-hours to eleven community service organizations and projects during the 2009-10 academic year including United Way, Salvation Army, Manhattan Catholic Charities, Flint Hills Breadbasket, Designated Driver Service, and Manhattan Public Library.

The Tekes are actively involved in the operation of a Designated Driver (DD) Program at Kansas State. The DD Program runs Wednesday through Saturday nights and provides a priceless service to all of the members and guests at the chapter house and pretty much anywhere in Manhattan. Over half of all volunteer hours were in support of the DD Program. In addition, the Tekes recorded 200 volunteer hours supporting Salvation Army (volunteers are needed daily to work in the Thrift Store/warehouse); over 130 volunteer hours supporting Marriage for Keeps (Manhattan Catholic Charities providing childcare); and almost 100 volunteer hours supporting United Way (i.e. landscaping for the Wolf House Museum).

Philanthropy

The Ronald and Nancy Reagan Alzheimer’s Research Institute

At its 2001 Conclave in New Orleans, the Grand Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon adopted the Alzheimer’s Association as an official TKE philanthropy. For many years TKE has partnered with the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute. The Alpha Lambda chapter is pleased to support this worthy cause.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research with national office in Chicago, IL. The mission of Alzheimer’s Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. The Alzheimer’s Association has been the catalyst and leader for a generation of advancements in Alzheimer research and care.

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association was incorporated on April 10, 1980. In 1982, Frater President Ronald Reagan designated the first National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week. In 1995 the Alzheimer’s Association established the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute. In 2004 the Alzheimer’s Association joined the world in mourning the loss of Frater President Ronald Reagan 10 years after announcing his Alzheimer diagnosis.

The Alpha Lambda chapter sponsored Teke Powder Puff Football, a sorority flag football tournament and Kansas State Greek tradition for almost forty years! The tournament format was changed this year with seven teams competing in ‘pool play’ on Sunday, November 1, 2009. The top four finishers advanced to semi-finals/finals on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Entry fees and sponsor fund raising netted the Tekes $935. The proceeds will benefit Alzheimer’s Association Ronald and Nancy Reagan Alzheimer’s Research Institute.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

In 2008 the Grand Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon adopted the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as an official TKE philanthropy. The Alpha Lambda chapter is pleased to support this worthy cause.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, based in Memphis, TN, is a leader in the fight against childhood cancer, sickle cell and other catastrophic illnesses. St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly. U.S. News & World Report has ranked St. Jude the top children's cancer hospital in the nation. This recognition is one of several that underscores St. Jude’s unique role in the charitable and health care landscape. In March 2010, St. Jude was the charity ranked highest in trust in the United States.

In August 1978, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity joined the fight against childhood cancer when Frater Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and fraternity member from the Gamma-Nu chapter at the University of Toledo, asked his fraternity to help him with his cause. Today Teke chapters across the country are raising funds and awareness to support the dream of Danny Thomas that no child should die in the dawn of life. Even though Frater Thomas died in February 1991, his vision for St. Jude lives on.

The Tekes sponsored the first annual Teke ‘Give-Away’, a gift certificate drawing, during the fall 2009 semester. The Teke ‘Give-Away’ is a drawing for the chance to win $75 gift certificates from Varney’s Book Store, or $50 gift certificates from Kite’s Grille & Bar. A $5 donation is requested for each chance to win. ‘Give-Away’ tickets were sold by Teke members and the Powder Puff Football/Give-Away table at the K-State Union. The Tekes raised a total $1,190 from Give-Away. The proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
