Rec Services Intramurals: K-State’s Own Olympic Games
Alpha Lambda Consistently Ranks Among Top Competitors In Fraternity Division!Kansas State stages its own version of the Olympic Games every school year in a sporting spectacle known to all K-Staters as Rec Services ‘intramurals’. The intramural sports program at Kansas State is regarded by many as one of the top college programs in the nation. Like the Olympic games, Kansas State students are grouped into different divisions (women, residence hall, independent and fraternity) and compete in over 38 team and individual sports ranging from flag football to horseshoes spread throughout the school year. Points are awarded in each sport leading to an overall intramural championship.
The Tekes compete against twenty-one other fraternities for the intramural championship in the fraternity division. Since 1981, the Tekes have won 17 out of 29 intramural championships and placed no lower than second or third during the other 12 years. Highlighting the modern era is the string of eight straight intramural championships from 1994 through 2001.
“Winning isn’t everything to our fraternity”, according to Mark Baird, #1001. “But it ranks right up there with oxygen.” Baird served as ‘athletic director’ for the Tekes during the late eighties. Several key tenants have helped the Tekes to achieve and maintain intramural excellence including organization, participation by the entire chapter (fraternity and independent divisions) and strong showings in all team sports and several individual sports.
The current intramural tradition traces its roots to the early seventies. During this period the Tekes made steady progress to organize and upgrade their intramural program, finally reaching a competitive level in 1975-76 when they finished intramurals in a tie for second place. Credit during those years goes to many fraters including Terry Huffman, #761 who served as one of the chapters first modern intramural athletic directors, taking the initiative to organize the chapter into a competitive force. The momentum generated in the seventies propelled the Tekes to the pinnacle in 1980-81 when they broke two decades of dominance in fraternity intramurals by the Betas to take their first intramural championship since the forties. Ironically, the 1980-81 championship coincided with the chapter’s 50th Anniversary with a number of fraters who competed in the chapter’s previous championship in attendance at the 50th Anniversary RCB.
Teke intramural finishes through the years:
The success achieved by the Tekes in intramurals is a source of pride that fuels excellence in all aspects of fraternity life. After twenty-nine years, this tradition has become interwoven into the chapter’s identity. Congratulations to all fraters past and present, including the chapter’s many team and individual intramural champions, and athletic directors who have made this tradition possible!
